LET'S ALL GET INVOLVED!

Today I'm thinking about doing my action research project on parental involvement in the junior high years. By parental, I mean any family member, person, or community member that is concerned in the student's success.

We all know that during the elementary years, family seems to always be around the child and tries to be involved. Sometimes, they even seem to overdo it, of course I don't think anyone can really overdo involving themselves in their child's success. However, when that child gets to  his/her junior high years, the support system seems to slowly diminish. For different reasons, the involvement that the student had during his/her elementary years is lost. These are the most critical years when that support, be it parents, family members, or family friend of the child need to be there for the student to be successful. Aside from the academic struggles, they tend to face new challenges that they had never had to deal with before associated with everything from growing up, to drugs, relationships, trying to fit in, discipline, difficult curriculum, not to mention no recess. It's a tough transition. They need help. Let's all remember what Hillary Clinton said, "It takes a village to raise a child". It's actually the responsibility of the community, not just the mom and dad.
